Sisters!
That familiar notification, “Your XX Membership is expiring soon / Auto-renewal for you has been completed,” is it popping up again? 😬
Every time I see it, I feel my wallet tighten, and then I start debating:
“Do I even use this membership anymore?”
“Feels useless, but what if I need it later?”
“Cancelling is such a hassle, fine, I’ll just renew…”
STOP! ✋ Stop auto-renewing mindlessly! If you keep doing this, your wallet will literally cry in despair! 😭
As a blogger dedicated to helping you “Instantly Solve” all sorts of consumption dilemmas in life, I absolutely must share my ultimate “Renewal Survival Guide” with you today! 🎓
Honestly, when facing renewal choices, you don’t need complicated thinking! Just ask yourself the following 4 soul-searching questions, and the answer will be immediately clear! 💯
💡 My “4 Renewal Decision Questions”:
1️⃣ 【Soul Question 1: Do I Truly NEED It?】🤔
👉🏻 Ask yourself:
- How many times have I used this feature/service in the last month/quarter? Do I use it weekly, monthly, or just occasionally when the mood strikes?
- Without it, can I not complete a certain important task or gain a specific core experience? Is it a must-have for me?
- Basic functions of many apps are actually sufficient. Are you renewing just for those few “premium” features, but do you actually use them regularly?
- Is it one of those membership softwares that was “productivity before purchase, and iQIYI after purchase” ? 😂 (Translator’s note: iQIYI is a popular Chinese streaming platform, implying it became just for passive entertainment instead of productive use).
My Take: Many memberships are bought just for the security of “having” them, thinking “just in case I need it.” But the truth is, that “just in case” often N-E-V-E-R comes! ⚡️ If your usage frequency is very low (e.g., using core features less than a couple of times a month), or it can be completely replaced by a free alternative, then it should definitely be on your “Cancellation Investigation List”!
2️⃣ 【Soul Question 2: Is the Value It Brings Worth the Cost?】💰
👉🏻 Ask yourself:
- What is the average cost of this membership (monthly/yearly fee) per use? Do I think this per-use cost is worth it?
- How important is the “value” it promises (saving time, being more efficient, exclusive content, ad-free, etc.) to me? Does it genuinely improve my quality of life / work efficiency / study results?
- Can its value be obtained through better alternatives? (e.g., for some cloud storage, using multiple free drives might suffice; for some tool software, are there reputable one-time purchase alternatives?)
- Think about what you “gain” by spending this money? Is it worth “losing” this cash?
My Take: That moment you pay for the renewal, does your heart ache a little? Don’t ignore that feeling! If renewing always brings you more “pain” than “great value for money,” the cost-effectiveness might be low. For instance, if you only get a video membership to watch one show and never open it again, isn’t paying per view or borrowing a friend’s account more cost-effective? If you use a study app membership less than an hour a week, wouldn’t buying a few relevant books or listening to free podcasts be more efficient? When measuring value, don’t just listen to the features merchants boast about; focus on the real, quantifiable value that matters to YOU! 💯
3️⃣ 【Soul Question 3: Are There CHEAPER/BETTER Alternatives or Renewal Options?!】🤯
👉🏻 Ask yourself:
- Does this membership have an annual fee option that’s way cheaper than the monthly fee? (If you’re sure you’ll use it frequently for a year, go for the annual fee no-brainer!)
- Are there family plan options / splitting costs with friends? Is the price acceptable when shared? (Make sure it’s through legitimate channels!)
- Are there bundles with other services? (e.g., phone plan includes membership, buy hardware get membership)
- Wait! When trying to cancel, does the platform pop up a “retention offer” ? (This is super effective! If you just want to pause, try going through the cancellation process. Many platforms offer limited-time discounts to keep you! 🤫)
- Are there free, open-source, or one-time purchase alternative software or services that can perfectly replace it? (Many niche but powerful tool apps have this model!)
My Take: NEVER just pay whatever the platform tells you for renewal! Always look one step further! The price for automatic renewal is often not the best option. Check the official website, payment platforms (Alipay/WeChat often have membership promotions), or even try cancelling to see if there are hidden “easter egg” discounts! Often, cancelling first and then reconsidering renewing will open up a new world! 😎
4️⃣ 【Soul Question 4: After Renewing, Do I Feel More In Control Or More Anxious?】❤️🩹
👉🏻 Ask yourself:
- Am I renewing to feel more at ease, more convenience, or more efficient, or because I’m afraid of losing something, afraid of hassle, and feel forced to renew?
- After renewing, will I feel satisfied knowing I’m making full use of it, or will I feel guilty about the increased bill and not using it much?
- Does the continuous expenditure of this membership add pressure to my overall financial situation? Is it a “hidden,” unnoticed long-term burden?
My Take: Some memberships, like important cloud services or essential work software, genuinely bring peace of mind and efficiency when renewed. You feel the money is well spent! You feel in control! 👍 But some memberships, even though you barely use them, deduct a fixed amount each month/year. Every time you see the bill, your heart sinks, and you might even be afraid to look. That’s “membership anxiety” ! You spent the money but didn’t gain peace of mind; instead, it increased internal friction! For such memberships, cutting your losses is the best choice! Spend your money on things that make you feel happy, secure, and valuable! 📈
🌟 Here’s My Personal Experience!
I used to have an annual fitness app membership that cost several hundred yuan. When I bought it, I was full of ambition, determined to get abs! 💪 But what happened? I stuck with it for less than two months before it started gathering dust… Every time I saw the renewal reminder, my heart ached! 💔 I went through the 4 questions:
- Use it? -> Barely used it! My phone’s step counter was enough.
- Value? -> The health value it brought was close to zero, a complete waste.
- Cheaper option? -> Getting a monthly pass to my local gym would have yielded higher utilization!
- Feeling? -> Every time I saw the deduction text message, my heart ached + I felt anxious!
Conclusion: Canceled without hesitation! 👋 ByeBye! With that money saved, I can now buy several sessions of my favorite dance class or get myself some comfy workout gear. The happiness and value I get are so much more real! ✌️
Of course, there are memberships I find super worth it and renew without a second thought! Like my cloud storage 💾 and a certain professional stock image website membership 🎨. Because they are essential for my work, without them my efficiency plummets. Spending money for efficiency and convenience is totally worth it and makes me feel secure!
